Oil on Canvas depicts tramp at farmhouse door asking for handout with family looking through door at him. 42” by 64” with gold leaf cast plaster frame with classical foliate decoration.
Eastman Johnson had a reputation as a portrait artist and as a painter of genre pictures. He has twice painted President Cleveland’s portrait and Congress paid him $2500 to paint a portrait of ex president Benjamin Harrison (Wat. Herald Saturday, July 6, 1895)
